The Idea
International travel is on the increase: Every year, more and more people visit foreign countries for private or business reasons. Especially destinations in South East Asia are chosen by a lot of tourists and also by globally active companies sending their employees to this region.
People prepare and organise their holidays and business trips well and get good preventive advice from their physicians before starting their travels, but there is a lack of information on where to go for good medical treatment in case of an emergency: - How is the quality of treatment at a foreign hospital? - Where can I communicate in English or even in German or French? - Are relatives allowed to accompany the patient during the stay? - ...
An improvement of the information system is crucial because the number of tourists who need medical treatment during their stay abroad is high:
One in 12 travellers needs to visit a doctor while abroad
One in 250 travellers ends up going to hospital
One in 1.700 travellers has to be repatriated (26.000 patients have to be repatriated to Germany yearly)
The TEMOS project
TEMOS establishes a globally active competence network of hospitals guaranteeing a high quality treatment of their patients. To obtain the TEMOS certificate which is accepted by worldwide leading travel insurance and assistance companies, medical institutions have to fulfil TEMOS quality standards assessed by the TEMOS team on-site. Certified network partners are also interested in using telemedicine through satellite or terrestrial links for the exchange of knowledge and patient data with other partners (lectures, teleconsultation and “second opinion”). TEMOS uses standard videoconference systems compatible to many other systems available on the market.
Participating hospitals are published via the TEMOS information systems: Travel insurances, assistance companies, tour operators, globally operating companies and other interested parties have the possibility to get access to the TEMOS database and information system storing validated hospital data. 50.000 German doctors and pharmacists are informed twice a year about news in travel medicine and about new hospitals of the TEMOS network. Patients and all interested can visit the website www.crm.de/temos to get basic information about hospitals worldwide.
The publication of details of these hospitals, the expansion of the information system for tourists and business travellers on where to go if medical treatment abroad is necessary in addition to the use of telemedicine leads to an improvement of medical care for the patient.

"History"
TEMOS started in 2004 under the umbrella of the European Space Agency (ESA, ARTES 3 program), visiting European countries. In 2006, TEMOS focused on Brazil and Tunisia. Indonesia was chosen to be the first country in South East Asia where tourism is increasing and also changing and where a rising number of international companies are operating. Information about high quality treatment of hospitals is getting more important. TEMOS offers the possibility to collaborate with an international project and an international network. TEMOS is convinced that the potential of Indonesia is still underestimated by many people in many countries. The partnerships via the TEMOS network will change this situation.
